NazoReality Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 16, 2026

NazoReality ("the app", "we", "us", or "our") is a mixed-reality reference-tracing application for Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, published by Northstar XR. This policy explains what information the app and its companion website handle, how it is used, and how you can request deletion of your data.

We designed NazoReality to keep your data on your device wherever possible. We do not require an account, we do not ask you to sign in, and we do not sell your personal information.

Information We Collect

Data stored only on your device

The following stays on your Quest headset and is never transmitted to us:

  • Reference images you load. After you scan a QR code, the app downloads the image and caches it locally on your device so it can be reused across sessions.
  • Placement data (spatial anchors). When you save a placement, the app stores the image's position, rotation, scale, and color/opacity settings locally, using Meta's on-device spatial anchor storage. These anchors are local to your headset — they are not uploaded to us and are not shared with other users.
  • Camera frames used for QR scanning. When you press the scan button, the app captures a single passthrough-camera frame and decodes it on your device to read the QR code. Camera images are processed locally and are never transmitted off the device or stored by us.

Data involved when you download an image

When you scan a QR code, the app makes a standard web request to the image URL encoded in that code in order to download the image. The app does not attach any account, user, or device identifier to this request. As with any web request, the server hosting that image (which may be our companion website or any third-party URL you chose to encode) will receive standard request information, including your device's IP address and basic request headers.

Companion website (optional)

NazoReality offers an optional companion website that lets you prepare an image and generate a QR code for it. If you use it:

  • The image you upload is stored temporarily on our server so your headset can download it via the QR code.
  • Uploaded images are automatically deleted a short time after upload (typically within one hour).
  • Our web server may keep standard, short-lived access logs (such as IP address and request time) for security and troubleshooting.

Using the companion website is entirely optional — you may point NazoReality at any image URL you control.

Crash and diagnostics data

The app uses Unity's Cloud Diagnostics service to collect crash reports and error diagnostics. This helps us find and fix stability problems. These reports contain technical information such as device model, operating-system version, app version, and crash/stack-trace details. They do not contain the images you load or your placement data, and they are not used to identify you personally.

How We Use Your Data

  • On-device data (images, placements, anchors) is used solely to display and restore your reference images inside the app on your headset.
  • The image download request is used only to fetch the image you asked for.
  • Temporarily uploaded images on the companion website are used only to deliver the image to your headset, then deleted.
  • Crash/diagnostics data is used only to monitor stability and fix bugs.

We do not use any of this data for advertising, profiling, or sale to third parties.

How Your Data Is Shared

We do not sell your personal information. Data is shared only as needed to operate the app:

  • Meta. Your use of NazoReality on a Meta Quest headset is also subject to Meta's own privacy policy. Meta's platform and operating system may collect data independently of this app; see meta.com/legal/privacy-policy.
  • Unity. Crash and diagnostics reports are processed by Unity Technologies under their privacy policy; see unity.com/legal/privacy-policy.
  • Image host. If the QR code points to a third-party URL, the download request goes to that third party's server, which is governed by that party's own policy.

Data Retention

  • On-device data remains on your headset until you delete it (see below) or uninstall the app.
  • Images uploaded to the companion website are deleted automatically a short time after upload (typically within one hour).
  • Web server logs are retained only briefly for security and troubleshooting.
  • Crash/diagnostics reports are retained according to Unity's data-retention practices.

How to Delete Your Data

You can delete your data at any time:

  • On-device data (images, placements, spatial anchors): delete saved placements from within the app, or uninstall NazoReality from your Quest headset. Uninstalling removes all locally stored images, placement data, and anchors associated with the app.
  • Companion-website images: these are deleted automatically a short time after upload (typically within one hour); no action is required.
  • Crash/diagnostics data or any other request: email us at [email protected] and we will process your deletion request.

To request deletion of any data we may hold, or to ask a privacy question, contact us at [email protected]. We will respond within a reasonable timeframe.

Children's Privacy

NazoReality is intended for a general audience aged 13 and older. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us information, contact us at [email protected] and we will delete it.

Permissions the App Requests

  • Headset camera (passthrough): used only to scan QR codes on-device. Frames are not stored or transmitted.
  • Spatial anchors / scene: used to save and restore where you placed your reference images in your space, stored locally on your device.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
